Fracture

A fracture is a serious injury to the skeleton and to the surrounding tissues - tendons, liagments, muscles, nerves, blood vessls and skin - indicated by:

  • deformity and abnormal mobility of the injured bone
  • extreme tenderness around the site of the injury
  • swelling and bruising caused by damage to the soft tissues and blood vessels

Fracture Treatment

If you suspect a fracture, massage is absolutely forbidden. You could do considerable damage by massaging over the site of even the smallest break. For example, a splinter of bone could lacerate an artery, nerve or a vein. A qualified remedial masseur would have the knowledge to administer treatment almost immediately, but you should not attempt any treatment until the bone is mended. Cover the open injury with a clean bandage, immobilize the limb and raise it. Take the casualty to the hospital immediately, where a plaster cast will be applied.

Once the cast has been removed, with the doctor's permission, you can begin gentle effleurage of the limb in the direction of the venous flow. Massage treatment can relieve muscular spasm and pain and help to restore muscle tone.
